Edgar Wright’s next comes complete with a Twist

Cornetto trilogy helmer Edgar Wright is penning a sequel to “Oliver Twist” – albeit one with a difference.

“Dodge and Twist” will be somewhat of a Steampunk version of the classic tale.

FilmDivider have the scoop :

The germ of Dodge and Twist‘s story came from Charles Dickens, of course, but the idea to concoct a twenty-years-later steampunk adventure caper starring Oliver Twist and The Artful Dodger apparently originated with Ahmet Zappa.

Then screenwriter Cole Haddon came on board and cracked the story. He was followed by Simon Beaufoy who did a full rewrite, and most recently, we have learned, Edgar Wright has submitted a fresh draft of his own.

Though many elements of the plot and characterisation remain intact, Wright’s script was a full revision, from the front page to the back. We understand that he filed his version of the pages less than a week ago, so it may soon prove to be his draft that gets a green light for the project, or at least starts securing the right talent to get everything in shape.
It’s worth noting that Tony Lee‘s novel Dodge and Twist shares little more than its title and the “let’s do an adventure sequel” premise with this film, but the basic idea is a good one, and Lee appears to have had it first, or at the very least independently, so all credit to him for that.
Zappa will be named as a producer on the film, alongside The Amazing Spider-Man‘s Matt Tolmach, which might prove to be very useful. Which is to say, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Andrew Garfield get the role of The Artful Dodger. Eddie Redmayne, meanwhile, is the pictured casting for the older Twist.
Be interesting to see who is cast as the young Queen Victoria!
