Edgerton set for Black Mass, Double Hour

Joel Edgerton’s carrier is firing on all cylinders right now.

The Aussie thesp, off the back of his bravura turn in “The Great Gatsby”, is snapping up plum roles left, right and center.

Earlier today it was announced he’ll be sharing the screen with Michelle Williams on “The Double Hour”, a Joshua Marston written/directed piece about two lovers who find themselves victims in the midst of a dangerous and well planned robbery.

The film unites a couple of old friends. Edgerton, of course, was a good mate of Heath Ledger’s – and played opposite the late Aussie actor in “Ned Kelly”. He and Williams know each other from those days.

Sounds like a good piece for Edgerton.

And now, according to Deadline, he’ s playing a meaty role in the Johnny Depp/Whitey Bulger crook drama “Black Mass”.

Barry Levinson (“Rainman”) has cast Edgerton as FBI Agent John Connolly in the true-life yarn of one of history’s most notorious criminals.

Bulger rose to the top of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List when he disappeared for a decade before he could be put behind bars. Many felt he could never have gotten that far without the help of John Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger and his brother. Connolly was tasked with bringing down the Italian mob, and he was aided by Bulger, who burnished his own position as Boston crime kingpin by getting ride of the competition for his Winter Hill gang. Edgerton will play Connolly, who was lauded for his work before things went south for him. He was eventually convicted of racketeering and obstruction of justice for aiding Bulger, and who is currently in a Massachusetts state prison for second degree murder. Edgerton gets a meaty role in a story about a law enforcement officer with conflicted loyalties.

Edgerton’s currently playing Tom Buchanan on screens in Baz Luhrmann’s lavish recreation of “The Great Gatsby”.
