Finnell and Dante talk Gremlins 3

Will Warner make a cheap direct-to-DVD sequel?

With the Ghostbusters about to slide down the pole again, The Lost Boys again about to trick town newcomers into eating worms, and the Dukes about to go back to the ‘beginning’, would it be at all surprising to hear that Tinseltown’s considering letting Gizmo out of the dark box again?

Rumor has it that Warner Premiere – the newly constructed direct to video sequel arm of Warner Bros – might be looking at bringing the kings of the midnight munchies back for another bite. If it happens, the brains behind the original 80s hit won’t be happy.

Talking to Empire Magazine, Producer Michael Finnell mentioned that “they [WB] might do a low-budget direct-to-DVD version”, but neither he nor director Joe Dante would donate their services to it.

According to Dante, “Gremlins was governed by the technology that produced it. Now it would be CGI, and you could do anything. There may be places for the jokes to go [The White House?]. But you’ve got a company who owns the rights to a movie that they don’t quite understand. I think it’s going to be difficult for them to make another one”.

Zack Gallighan’s determined to make sure they do, I’m sure, and you can’t blame him either – besides Billy (and that knob from the “Waxwork” movies who took on the hot wax), what else is the guy known for? That blink and you’ll miss it cameo in “Zandalee” wasn’t exactly of the caliber of say Piven in “Singles”, or Casey Affleck in “American Pie”, ya know?

Would I watch a “Gremlins 3”? Hell yeah. Child of the 80s right here. I’d line up for that, “Return of the Karate Kid”, “Prettier in Pink”, “The Morning Tea Club”, “Weirder Science” and “Still Romancing the Stone” ” (I bet you-know-who is going to write into the you-know-what requesting more information on those projects). Would I like any of them? I doubt it; especially not some cheapish starless puppet-less “Gremlins 3”… but like Dante, I don’t doubt that it’s in the works right now. (On the other hand, there’s one thing Phoebe Cates could do to ensure an audience…. )

Now sit back and enjoy the excellence that was “Gremlins 2 : The New Batch”
