You might be surprised to know that Jerry Bruckheimer’s accountant isn’t alone in wanting to “Top Gun 2” to come to fruition. The prolific producer – currently promoting his “Lone Ranger” flick – says the flyboys follow-up is a priority for a lot of people. And though the sequel to the best music video ever made hit a major setback last year when it’s director, the late, great Tony Scott, sadly passed away, the interested parties are still determined to get it done. Sometime. Somehow.
Speaking to The Playlist, the “Lone Ranger” producer said they plan for “Top Gun 2” to retain Scott’s original vision for the film (which included old-school flyboy ‘Maverick’, played by Tom Cruise, working in an era of ‘drones’). It was Scott, who had been heavily researching the film – with Cruise – when he died, who got people enthusiastic about the movie.
“A lot of that has to do with Tony’s vision. He had a really exciting vision and he got everybody excited about it. That enthusiasm carried forward.”
Bruckheimer assumes they’ll stick to the same storyline and idea that Scott had for the movie.
Last we heard, Christopher McQuarrie (“Jack Reacher”) was working on the screenplay. Bruckheimer says that McQuarrie’s no longer involved in the film – suggesting his revision of the script might already be done? – because of his commitment to another Tom Cruise movie, “Mission : Impossible 5”.
As I said earlier, Bruckheimer’s not the only one flying the flag for the movie – I am too. No, seriously, Cruise is too.
“We’re at a point right now where everybody wants to make it,” he explained. “For a while it was Tom was excited about it but the studio didn’t want to commit or the studio was excited and Tom didn’t want to do it. And that’s been going on for 30 years. And now we’re at a point where the studio is excited and Tom is excited.”
No idea when this sequel is going to happen now, particularly with Cruise’s commitment to “M:I 5” (and whatever else is on his dance-card), but here’s hoping they can get it done while Rick Rossovich’s interest in acting has been revived*.
* Yes, it’s true. The ‘Rossovich’ is back!
