20th Century Fox has locked in filmmaker Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”) to helm “The New Mutants”, a spin-off of the studio’s endlessly-popular “X-Men” franchise, according to Deadline.
The project, which Boone co-writes with Knate Gwaltney, will be produced by “X-Men” alumni Simon Kingberg and Lauren Schuler Donner.
This one fixes on a different group of mutants – from the ones we’ve gotten to know during the course of the existing “X-Men” movies – including Cannonball, Cypher, Magik, Wolfsbane, and Dani Moonstar.
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters”, says Kinberg.
“New Mutants” isn’t the first “X-Men” spin-off – others include the “Wolverine” solo films, as well as the upcoming “Gambit” starring Channing Tatum – and it likely won’t be the last.
