Full trailer for The Runaways

Though I wasn’t a huge fan of Joan Jett (and either of her bands, The Runaways or The Blackhearts) I did appreciate a couple of her/their records – namely, Crimson and Clover, Do You Want to Touch Me and Bad Reputation. And I believe I’ve also got the soundtrack to “Light of Day”, the film which Jett co-starred with Michael J.Fox in, hiding in the garage somewhere. Likely under a cobweb, spider or discarded baby toys… whatever, I have it. I liked it.

Love a good musical biopic though – especially when the subject’s someone we’re quite familiar with. Most of us grew up listening to the music of Joan Jett on the, er, wireless. Most of us also couldn’t help but notice the various articles that’d pop up about the wild artiste in the, um, stone tablet (no internet in the late 70s, early 80s kids – – can you believe that!?). She was definitely a bit of a firecracker.

But how much of that troubled firecracker will we see in “The Runaways”? That, I’m not sure, mainly because Jett herself shepherded the project. Depends how self-depreciating and honest she wants to be, I suppose. She likely won’t want to be seen as too much of a loose cannon (which many say she was). Whatever the case, the film looks fun – and Kristen Stewart looks like she really embodies the part of the night-coloured rock n’roller too. But how I can not mention how surprisingly good young Dakota Fanning looks as Cherie Currie!? Wow! Quite the transformation!
