Has Nicolas Cage finally discovered the message boards at IMDB?
Cinema’s most famous hot prop has signed for a film that… well, sounds half-decent. And it isn’t a comic-book movie. Nor a supernatural thriller. Or a Disney adventure flick. Nor a sequel. Remake. Prequel. Heck, it’s not even a big film by any means.
Cage is back in “Adaptation” and “Leaving Las Vegas” territory with “Black Butterfly”, a relatively low-budget ($13) psycho thriller from from German production group Bavariapool.
In what sounds like an arty version of “The Hitcher”, “Butterfly” will team Cage with German actress Veronica Ferres.
Says The Hollywood Reporter :
Cage will play the reclusive author Paul, who befriends a drifter, with fatal consequences.
The $13 million feature is based on the French TV thriller Papillon noir which starred Stephane Freiss and ex-soccer star Eric Cantona as the drifter Jack.
Bavariapool is co-producing Black Butterfly with L.A.-based Paradox Entertainment and with Hyde Park on board as a co-financer. Actor Brian Goodman, who made his directorial debut with the Mark Ruffalo/Ethan Hawke starrer What Doesn’t Kill You (2008), will direct.
Shooting on Black Butterflyis set to start early 2012 in eastern Germany.
Brian Goodman’s “What Doesn’t Kill You” was – contrary to how many people saw it – actually quite a decent flick; hopefully he, and this German outfit, can help salvage Cage’s career before he succumbs to a “Shaggy Dog” reboot or “National Treasure 25”.
