Heading back to Madagascar

Believe it or not, I still haven’t seen "Madagascar". I don’t know whether it’s got anything to do with not wanting my memory of going to New York’s Central Park Zoo last September tainted, or the fact that Chris Rock’s voice will keep me awake at night – night sweats, pillow-to-the-noggin, banging the sheets…the works – or the fact that, well, I’ve just been too busy playing darts. Regardless, I best check it out soon – the sequels on the way.

Dreamworks has announced a sequel to the hit family film. Chris Rock, Ben Stiller and Jada Pinkett Smith have all signed on to reprise their roles as Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra and Gloria the Hippo, respectively.

DreamWorks Animation’s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says, "As a result of its tremendous box office success, the potential to tell a new chapter in its story and the popularity of the film’s characters, we are excited to announce that we are making ‘Madagascar’ our second company franchise — along with ‘Shrek.’ We will release a theatrical sequel in 2008."

In addition, Katzenberg has announced a direct-to-video spin-off, featuring the scene-stealing Madagascar Penguins. It’ll hit stores in 2009.
