Jimmy Smits gettin’ down with HBO drama

Earlier today, Ash reported that RZA (“Man with the Iron Fists”) will direct Azealia Banks “in It Doesn’t Have to Rhyme”. That one’s a Lionsgate production described as being in the same vein as “8 Mile”.

..the drama tells of a female rapper (Banks) who enrolls in college and enters a poetry course. While the class doesn’t improve her lyrical skills, as she had hoped, it does unleash in her a passion for slam poetry.

Now word on another musical.. of sorts.

Jimmy Smits (“Dexter”) will star in Bazz Luhramnn’s smallscreen Hip Hop drama.

THR says the actor is playing “Francisco Cruz, better known as “Papa Fuerte,” a South Bronx political boss who delivers services to his constituents that the city has failed to provide, such as jobs, housing and healthcare” on “The Get Down”.

“The Puerto Rican culture of the ’70s Bronx plays such a large role in the story we are telling that the character of Papa Fuerte had to be played by an actor who could bring experience, gravitas and authenticity to the role,” said Luhrmann. “I know our entire cast is excited to have someone of Jimmy’s talent joining us on the journey we are undertaking. We are thrilled to have him on The Get Down.”

The 13-episode series debuts in 2016 on HBO.
