“Directing,” the latest release from Focal Press’s Film Craft series, is a sharply written foray into the filmmaking techniques of some of the world’s greatest visionaries. Though the book is essentially a guide for aspiring directors, it’s an enjoyable read for any film lover. Written by “Screen International” editor Mike Goodridge, it provides essential insights into the technical elements of production as well as the creative process. It features the likes of Clint Eastwood and Jean-Luc Godard as well as understated auteurs like Igmar Bergman.

One of the best aspects of “Directing” is its section on Michael Haneke, which illustrates the brilliance behind “Code Unknown” and his earlier shocker “Funny Games.” The book analyzes specific elements of his work, such as lengthy shot sequences and dialogue structure. Classics such as “The Grifters” are also explored along with lesser known works such as Susanne Bier’s tearjerker “After the Wedding.”

The book is a must have for any film student or avid filmgoer who longs to know more about their favorite directors.
