Killing Wolfie

Roger Avary doing another video game movie

Roger Avary’s been quiet in recent times – suppose he did write that “Silent Hill” thing, and has been working on “Beowulf”, but it seems there hasn’t been a full-blown Avary experience since, well, “Rules of Attraction”? – so it’s good to hear he’s returning to captain a speakerphone again. Even if it is for, well….

The “Pulp Fiction” co-writer will write and direct – I don’t know why he’s doing this stuff, I really don’t – ““Return to Castle Wolfenstein,” based on the video game of the same name. Meh.

I assumed “Silent Hill” was a one off, but the guy’s obviously got a woody for video games, and seems to be happy to go steady with their inevitable spin-off films for a while. Strange. He’s at his best when he’s doing edgy, hip little dramas that have something to say… like “Rules”.

The WWII-set “Return to Castle Wolfenstein” revolves around U.S. Army Ranger B.J. Blazkowicz, who leads a team of agents into Castle Wolfenstein in order to investigate the Nazis’ SS Paranormal Division. Producing is Samuel Hadida, who worked with Avary on “Silent Hill” and was no doubt the force that drew the Oscar Winner to the project.

“I’ve been playing the character of B.J. Blazkowicz since the epic ‘Wolfenstein 3D’ first bruised my brain and have ever since wanted to bring his adventures to life on the bigscreen,” Avary said. “It’s time to bust some dams, storm some bunkers and blow up some bridges.”

Ya never know, it may be OK.
