Leonardo DiCaprio to play Leonardo da Vinci

Say that 10 times fast. Leonardo DiCaprio is set to play his namesake Leonardo da Vinci (that’s fact people, I didn’t make that up) in an upcoming biopic about the painter/scientist. Paramount has won a bidding war to acquire the rights to the book “Leonardo da Vinci” by Walter Isaacson, Deadline reports.

After a furious bidding war with Universal, Paramount came up trumps to take heed of the film rights, which will be produced by DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson under their Appian Way banner. Author Walter Isaacson also penned the novel “Steve Jobs”, which became a big screen feature starring Michael Fassbender.

Da Vinci is perhaps most well known for his Mona Lisa painting but also had a lot more to his story. Isaacson used Da Vinci’s notebooks to weave a narrative that connects his art to his science and of course his imagination. The artist lived from 1452 – 1519 and in that time pursued studies in anatomy and had a lifelong enthusiasm with staging theatrical productions. The book also notes that he was somewhat of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted and at times heretical

Of course it’s early days for the Leonardo production, but no doubt more details will surface in due time.
