As Moviehole exclusively reported last year, “Major League” writer/director David S.Ward is planning to reunite the cast of the 1989 sports comedy for a new sequel. Ward told us he had spoken to Charlie Sheen about it.
Sheen has confirmed Ward’s claims that the film is in the works, but says unless someone writes him a fat cheque you won’t be seeing Ricky ‘Wild Thing’ Vaughn in the new film.
“Well you know I’d like to (star in another Major League film) but you might want to flood Morgan Creek (production company) with letters and an angry mob with burning torches because they don’t seem to think I’m as valuable as I do.” Charlie Sheen told a TMZ staffer in a live interview. “Everyone’s on board but me, so it’s on them.”
Of course, Morgan Creek’s going to come to the party and cough up the dollars – a “Major League” film without Charlie Sheen is well, er, “Major League : Back in the Minors” with Scott Bakula.
Ward told Moviehole last year that Sheen was very keen to do the movie – but obviously not keen enough.
“He’s excited to do it if and when it happens. But he can’t shoot it this year, because he’s back doing Two-and-a-Half Men, but we could potentially shoot it next year – in his hiatus from the show.”
Sucks for Ward if Sheen doesn’t do it because the new film would have essentially centered around the troubled actor’s character.
“It’s 20 years later, and Wild Thing comes out of retirement to work with this 19-year-old player. We’ve actually got three new characters in the new film. And if the new film is popular, they could carry the franchise on.”
But again, we need Sheen to hold the torch until that time comes.
