Mamma Mia! : The Movie [DVD]

By Clint Morris

I have to admit, I didn’t anticipate getting much out of this but as a testament to the filmmakers who believe they’ve made a movie for everyone, my toes couldn’t stop wiggling throughout it!

Based on the Broadway musical, and inspired by the music of ABBA, ”Mamma Mia!” is a very entertaining musical spectacular that’ll stir up tears and laughter as two women tell – mostly in singing form – of their rollercoaster love lives.

The gorgeous Amanda Seyfried (TVs ”Big Love”) plays wide-eyed Sophie, the daughter who “has a dream”…She sends her wedding invitation to three of her mother’s former lovers (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard play Donna’s ex-flames – and yes, all three actors sing!), hoping that she will discover who her real father is.

Seyfried is terrific in the lead role, Meryl Streep, as Donna, the pessimistic, done-it-all mother with a disgraceful past, is equally brilliant (and wow! What a voice!) and very funny, whilst Brosnan, Firth and Skarsgard, all exceedingly charming, will bowl you over with their surprisingly inept singing voices! (Though, and as many have pointed out, Brosnan’s probably the weakest link).

Such a fun movie…. go on, give it a shot!

Extras

A couple of great featurettes on the making of the movie, an entertaining feature Commentary With Director Phyllida Lloyd, some deleted scenes, and a sing-a-long feature – – saving you from having to remember the words to each ABBA classic as you sing along with the cast!
