Sounds like that plan to unite Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner, the stars of the “Bourne” series, for a fifth film, is off.
Speaking to Movieline, Damon says Tony Gilroy’s “The Bourne Legacy”, which Renner headlined instead of him, is the reason you’ll likely not see him reprise Jason Bourne ever again.
“From what I understand, [The Bourne Legacy] kind of relives [The Bourne Ultimatum] from a different perspective. What that means, because they use our actors and characters, is that whatever they said [in Legacy] is true and so we’d have to acknowledge it in any Bourne movie that we’d do. And that makes it really tough. I don’t think we can do the Dallas it-was-all-a-dream scenario. I don’t think the audience would go for that after they paid money to see a movie.”
Damon also suggested that Paul Greengrass, who directed “Bourne Supremacy” and “Bourne Ultimatum”, won’t ever go near the series again either. Greengrass has had some issues with Universal – dating back to development on the fourth film, which at one time he was going to direct Matt Damon in – and also Gilroy, who helmed “Legacy”, so not a surprise.
So, sounds to us like there might be another “Bourne” – but it’ll be a sequel to “Legacy”, with Jeremy Renner.
Shame.
