Nicolas Cage in September 11 movie

They said they’d never turn the events into a film. They lied. And then some.

The events of September 11, 2001, are getting the cinematic re-telling, says Variety, with two projects, one from Paramount and one from Columbia, announcing production.

Nicolas Cage and Oliver Stone are teaming up on the first, an untitled pic about the rescue of two Port Authority police officers from the rubble of the World Trade Center.

Cage will play either Will Jimeno or John McLoughlin, two Port Authority police officers who were rescued in the nick of time.

The film, based on a script by Andrea Berloff, is already in pre-production in New York.

The other 9/11 movie, based on the book "102 Minutes" by Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn, is also a go picture. The draft has been penned by "Shattered Glass" helmer Billy Ray.

The film tells of the rescue effort that went on between 8:46 am and 10:28 am – the time that the first plane hit the tower and the collapse of the tower.

The project addresses the rescue attempts that took place between the moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. and the collapse of the first tower at 10:28 a.m.
