Producer offers Goonies 2 update

Last year director Richard Donner worked Sloth devotees into a McFlurry with suggestions that the long-gestating “Goonies 2” was ready to go.

Though the cast of the ’80s classic have always been keen about heading back to Astoria for another jaunt, Donner’s words were the biggest piece of coal placed in a stove that had been lukewarm for years.

Now, according to producer Frank Marshall, the project is still very much a possibility – but it’s anyone’s guess when it’ll happen?

“It’s in discussion”, the prolific producer of such hits as “Jurassic Park” and “The Bourne Identity” tells Collider. “[Donner’s] talked to us about it, and we’ve talked to him. It’s all about the story. We don’t just do sequels to do them. The story has to be there.”

Donner, says Marshall, is the one coming in and asking “Okay, who’s got an idea?”

Everyone’s being smart about this. As Marshall reinforces, you don’t want to tarnish the legacy of the 1985 hit with a crappy sequel.

“Yeah, that’s very important. You don’t want to disappoint the fans by just doing a schlocky movie. You want to do a real legitimate movie. It’s not going to be a sequel. In the Amblin spirit of Goonies, that’s what has to be.”

Marshall notes that not having a good story was one of the main reasons why another ‘Jurassic’ film (this year’s “Jurassic World”) took so long to come together.
