Puck! Smith finally finds his Hit Somebody lead

Nicholas Braun, probably familiar to our younger readers as the male lead in ABC Family’s “Ten Things I Hate About You” series, has snagged the lead role in writer/director Kevin Smith’s hockey comedy “Hit Somebody”.

Smith revealed the news on his podcast, noting that Seann William Scott was his first choice for the role but Scott opted to do a rival hockey project instead, “The Goon”, so the film was put hold on while the filmmaker scouted for a new headline act. Smith went on to say that he discovered Braun on his latest film “Red State”, in which he has a small part, and says he “is the perfect lead” for the long-gestating sports laffer.

In an earlier podcast (in fact, this was 2009 – shows you how long Smith’s been trying to get the movie up for), Smith said the film revolves Buddy, “a dude who loves Hockey. LOVES it. Sees the beauty in it. Wants to be that which he admires so much. He wants to be in the NHL and wants to play hockey. And he gets a chance to play Hockey but not the way he wanted to. The thing is, the dude is insanely passionate about it but no damn good. And there was a way in, and that way was that the dude could fight. So he finally gets in… we’re going to do it in the WHA (World Hockey Association). He gets to play professional hockey, but at the same time he doesn’t get to play the professional hockey that he dreamed of playing. Because every hockey player, every kid dreams of scoring goals, taking it to the net, you’re the hero and shit. No one dreams about “I’m the dude who fucking hits the guy so that the kid over there can take the puck to the net.” And the glory goes to that guy.” (Thanks to /film for the transcript)

“Hit Somebody” will begin filming sometime next Summer.
