Classic Media, Amblin Entertainment and Universal are talking about the possibility of relaunching Harvey Comics’ “Casper” as a big screen movie franchise. Though 1995’s “Casper”, directed by Brad Silberling, got a theatrical, the follow-up prequel and sequels all went straight-to-video.
Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) is said to be the frontrunner to play the gunslinger in Ron Howard’s highly-ambitious “Dark Tower” film series. If Bardem passes, the role will be offered to Viggo Mortensen (“Lord of the Rings”).
Samuel L. Jackson, Luke Wilson, and “Iron Man” babe Leslie Bibb will star in the film adaptation of Thomas Berger’s book “Meeting Evil”. The Chris Fisher (“S. Darko”) directed pic tells of a man who, after an altercation at a gas station, explodes with anger in an effort to protect his family. Though he’s been in talks for a while, it’s only now been confirmed that Brad Pitt will star in director Andrew ‘The Assassination of Jesse James’ Dominik’s “Cogan’s Tale”. The film, the story of a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that takes place during a high stakes poker game under protection of the mob, may also have reserved places for Bill Murray, Casey Affleck, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, Sam Rockwell and Zoe Saldana. It lenses in Louisiana in March.
Grant McCune, the visual effects wizard who helped “Star Wars” nab it’s Oscar for best vfx, has sadly passed away. Described as a “quiet but crucial” innovator who specialized in models and miniatures, Grant McCune was one of Hollywood’s best known special and visual effects artists pumping out designs for over 100 films.
Update! : No 3D for “Sucker Punch”. Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch”, which last we heard was going to be in 2D (Snyder said so himself), is now rumored to be getting the 3D treatment. Warner Bros announced last year that most of their films would be released in 3D so no big surprise. Speaking of “Sucker Punch”, there’s three new images from the film online.
“Toy Story 3” is the biggest moneymaker of 2010. Two other family films take out the second and third spots, respectively – “Alice in Wonderland” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1”.
Though he hasn’t heard anything about in a while, “Weird Science” (and “Mad Max”) star Vernon Wells suggests there might be a reunion in the works to mark the film’s 25th Anniversary.
New images from Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” have been released.
In an exhaustive but terrific interview with Collider, David Fincher mentions that he’d still like to try and get “Rendezvous with Rama” off the ground. “Rendezvous With Rama is a great story that has an amazing role for Morgan Freeman who is an amazing actor and would be amazing in this thing. The question was can we get a script that’s worthy of Morgan and can we get a script that is worthy of Arthur Clark and can we do all of that in an envelope that will allow the movie to take the kinds of chances that it wants to take. ‘Cuz we want to make a movie where kids go out of the theatre and instead of buying an action figure they buy a telescope. That was the hope. The hope is, let’s get people interested in the fucking movie. So there have been people that have been interested in this idea and we have never been able to get a script.”

I’d also like to take this opportunity to update you on some cool changes here at Moviehole for 2011. Firstly, Alicia is our new co-editor. One of my besties, Leash has been contributing to the site for years but her considerable contributions of late were deserving of something – a hot pizza, a small pay rise and a promotion.
Also. We now have an office in Los Angeles – Alicia will base herself there, and I’ll be doing the back-and-forth thing. You can find our pad in Burbank, just up the road from Warners.
Now, why take on the help? I had to. I’m actually heading up a new PR and Management firm from January 15 (I’m personally representing such actors as Cerina Vincent, Claudia Wells, Kristina Anapau, Tanit Phoenix and about ten others) and, well besides the obvious time factor, I’ll be working PR on some of the films of 2011 so we thought it’d be a good idea that someone else cover those – so there’s no conflict of interest or bias there. Yeah, it’s gonna get a little crazy, but I think exciting too – with our new presence in the United States, you’ll start seeing loads more content and some great exclusives. It’ll also be good to get into some Red Robin (best burgers in L.A!) again. Look forward to ‘feeling your presence’ again in 2011! (Which is, um, tomorrow)
