Sam Mendes won’t return to direct the next Bond flim

“Spectre” and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes is finished with James Bond.

“It was an incredible adventure, I loved every second of it,” Mendes said at the Hay Festival in Wales on Saturday. “But I think it’s time for somebody else.”

Mendes, who wants to set his sights on new projects, said he hopes his successor would come from an “unexpected direction,” just as he had.

“I’m a storyteller. And at the end of the day, I want to make stories with new characters,” he said.

While Mendes has exited the 007 franchise, we’re still not really sure whether Bond star Daniel Craig will step away from the character or not.

While he’s made it clear that returning to play Bond isn’t high on his list of priorities (to say the least), an official announcement is still yet to be made.

Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba are among the fan favourites to replace Craig in the coveted role, though Mendes made it clear that producer Barbara Broccoli will have the final say.

“It’s not a democracy … Barbara Broccoli decides who is going to be the next Bond, end of story,” he said.
