Sandler’s Slump Ends : Hotel Transylvania 2 no.1 at the box office!

Funny how things can change in a matter of weeks to months.

One minute Adam Sandler’s supposedly box-office poison, the next he’s the toast of the charts!

Sandler’s “Hotel Transylvania 2” scored a staggering $48.2 million at the US box office this weekend – his biggest opener to date. Sure, he’s not in the film, but it’s a Sandler film through and through, right down to the supporting cast – which features the voices of most of the “Pixel” star’s regular collaborators, including David Spade and Kevin James. Sandler also co-wrote the script for the animated flick.

The only other film of Sandler’s back catalog to make this kind of money was 2005’s “The Longest Yard” which pocketed $47.6 Million over the memorial day weekend.

Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution, said : “This is an absolutely stunning result from a beloved franchise and it has been a labor of love for all levels of the company starting with Sony chairman Tom Rothman through to Sony Animation president Kristine Belson to Josh Greenstein’s marketing and distribution team. They really brought this film to the next level. It’s not often that a sequel exceeds the opening of the first title the way this one has. Internationally, we had a huge expansion, doubling the first in the territories where we have opened so far. Hotel Transylvania 2 is up there with the most beloved animated franchises of all-time.”

Earlier this Summer, Sandler received some of the weakest returns of his career with “Pixels”, also a Sony product.
