Another board game is coming to the big screen! Waaaay back last year, Hollywood Insider had given us the scoop and told us that several board games including Monopoly, Candyland, Clue and Battleship were among the several growing list of board games that were set to get the Hollywood big screen treatment. And now ‘Risk’ is among the games to become a major motion picture.
Columbia Pictures, Hasbro and Overbrook Entertainment have brought aboard screenwriter John Hlavin for their upcoming film adaptation of the classic board game, ”Risk”.
Set to be an action thriller, John Hlavin will write the script, who’s written several scripts for TV & film including ”The Shield”, ”Underworld: New Dawn” (which has a Jan. 2012 release) and the TV show ”Trust Me”.
“Hasbro has already seen tremendous success with ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’,” said Columbia President Doug Belgrad when development started, “and audiences have shown a great desire for films that bring to life everything that has made these franchise properties stand the test of time. The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make ‘Risk’ a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.”
”Risk” was created by Albert Lamorisse, the French director of ”The Red Balloon” in 1957. He called it ”La Conquete du Monde” (The Conquest of the World). It was brought to the US by Parker Brothers two years later as ”Risk”.
