When he knocked back the chance to reprise his “Independence Day” role for this year’s sequel, producers of “Independence Day : Resurgence” had no choice but to kill off Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller as a way of explaining his absence from the follow-up.
The fate of Hiller was revealed last year via a viral promo video; in it, we learnt that the pilot was involved in a test piloting accident. The new film is set ten years after his passing.
Smith, out promoting his new film “Concussion”, tells Yahoo! that it was “terrible” when he found out his character had been killed off. Still, he looks forward to watching the movie.
“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.”
“Independence Day : Resurgence” opens in July.
