Kevin Smith’s “Mallrats” sequel is going the way of “Wet Hot American Summer”.
In the grand tradition of classic brands getting the small-screen treatment over on Cable, Smith has confirmed that his planned film sequel to the ’90s comedy will now be a 10-episode TV series.
Smith told WWMR-FM Philadelphia that directing a recent episode of The CW’s “The Flash” convinced him that television was a more fitting medium for a “Mallrats” follow-up.
The filmmaker has inked a deal with Universal to make the show – now it’s about finding it a home.
When it looked like it’d be a film, Smith had contacted most of the cast of the original – including Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Ethan Supplee, and even Ben Affleck – who had agreed to return.
As recently revealed, the “Tusk” helmer is also developing a TV series based on the cult classic “Buckaroo Banzai”.
Let’s hope that “Mallrats” TV show isn’t as woeful as that “Clerks” TV series spin-off…
