Smith still wants Lee for Fletch

Don’t go slotting Zach Braff’s name on the "Fletch Won" page at the IMDB just yet. Though the "Scrubs" star is apparently the fave – and the studio apparently loves him – and Braffy has met with director Kevin Smith to discuss the novel-to-film retool, Smith’s still tells TV Guide that he’s still gunning for his original choice.

The beard behind Silent Bob is hoping Jason Lee’s new series "My Name is Earl" is a success – that way, he can cast Lee in the role of the young Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher.

"I’m so delighted Jason is getting the recognition he deserves. Maybe now I can make a Fletch film staring Jason — I’ve wanted to do that for five years", tells Smith.

For those not in the know, Smith and Lee – a former pro skateboarder turned actor – are old buds, having worked together on several films including "Chasing Amy", "Mallrats", "Dogma", and "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back".

A prequel to the Chevy Chase starring "Fletch" series – though basically not linked – "Fletch Won" is based on the book of the same name and tells of a young reporter who’s .

Though Smith has long-favoured Lee for the lead, he’s also mentioned Ben Affleck, Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon, and Adam Sandler might be good. Recently, following the studio’s sneeze at the idea of Jason Lee headlining the film, Smith mentioned Zach Braff for the lead – with Braff apparently quite keen.
