Sommers directing G.I Joe sequel

In breaking news from the “Is he nuts?” pile, Stephen Sommers has agreed to retain his director position on Paramount’s inevitable “G.I Joe” sequel, TheWrap reports.

I suppose this is “news”, considering the rumours that did the rounds just before the release of the first film suggesting the studio wasn’t at all happy with the job Sommers did on the film and consequently fired him from the production. If those whispers were correct, seems Paramount has had a change of heart or, and is more likely the case, there wasn’t any truth to the claims.

Channing Tatum (and, I assume, the rest of the original cast) has signed on to reprise his role as Capt. Duke Hauser in the sequel. I also remember reading somewhere that Brendan Fraser would have a bigger role this time around. Whatever the case, with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (“Zombieland”) behind the screenplay, chances are this might be better than the first offering – though let’s not get too excited just yet.
