Star Trek Beyond helmer moving on to Akira?

Another scoop from Jeff Sneider at Meet the Movie Press today, who hears that Justin Lin (“Star Trek Beyond”) is being courted to direct the long-gestating feature take on classic Japanese anime “Akira”.

The project, housed at Warner Bros, has been in development since 2002.

Pre-Lin, a number of filmmakers have been linked to the project, including Stephen Norrington, Jon Peters, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Whitta, Albert Hughes, Ruairi Robinson, and Jaume Collet-Serra.

Cast-wise everyone from Keanu Reeves, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Zac Efron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Pine have been rumoured for roles in the pic. If Lin signs, maybe he’ll try and reignite Pine’s – the star of the filmmaker’s next, “Star Trek Beyond” – interest in the project.
