Star Wars spin-off from the director of Firefly!

While it’s much more likely he’ll do something original next, Marvel departee (have you heard? he’s had a bit of a spat with his former employer) Joss Whedon is being courted to direct one of the next “Star Wars” films.

According to Latino Review, the “Avengers : Age of Ultron” helmer is yakking with Lucasfilm and Disney about getting behind the Nikon on a future “Wars” flick. The most likely scenario sees Whedon replace Josh Trank on the upcoming stand-alone “Star Wars Anthology” movie – rumoured to be an origin story about Boba Fett, or another original character.

That film is still a few years off – Gareth Edwards gets to do his first, 2016’s “Star Wars Anthology : Rogue One” – so negotiations could go on for a while.

With Whedon likely to take pause from Marvel studios for a while (but he’ll be back – look at that traitorous Bryan Singer!), there’s an opportunity for Lucasfilm to rope the talented filmmaker into their fold, in turn guaranteeing Whedon another sure-thing money-spinner.

But as Whedon said in a recent interview – in which he was, funnily enough, asked about the chances of ever directing a “Star Wars” movie – he has to do something original again (he created “Buffy”, “Angel”, and “Firefly” – which was greatly inspired by the “Wars”) otherwise he’ll lose his credibility as a creator. Secondly, maybe the guy is a little blockbuster-fatigued after his last couple of films and needs to use a smaller project for some R&R?

Then, maybe, he’ll get his chance to introduce Han Solo to his long-lost brother… Captain Mal Reynolds.
