Step aside Lord Vader, now Matthew Fox gets to hang with the Emperor

Former “Lost” castaway Matthew Fox seems to be settling comfortably into his new home on the island of megastardomia.

Up soon, Fox co-stars opposite Brad Pitt in “World War Z” and also plays the villain in the “I, Alex Cross” movie (it’s a reboot of the crime movies Morgan Freeman fronted; Tyler Perry now plays Cross) but then it’s onto the ‘starring’ roles, it seems. According to Variety, Fox is to headline Peter ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ Webber’s next movie, “Emperor”.

The political thriller is set amidst the uncertainties of the days following the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII, when General Douglas MacArthur served as the de facto ruler of Japan as supreme commander of the occupying forces. Fox is playing General Bonner Fellers, one of MacArthur’s leading experts on the Japanese, who is “charged with reaching a decision of historical importance: should Emperor Hirohito be tried and hanged as a war criminal?”

The trade says the movie will also explore the story of Fellers’ love affair with a Japanese exchange student he had met years before in the U.S., and his quest to find her in the ravaged post-war landscape.

David Klass and Vera Blasi wrote the script for the film, with lensing to take place in New Zealand and Japan at the end of the month.
