Terminator Auctioned Off

The rights to the “Terminator” franchise are being auctioned off this month, according to a story in The Financial Times.

Shingles keeping a close eye on the final selling price include Summit (home of the “Twilight” films), Sony (who distributed the last couple of “Terminator” films internationally), Media Rights Capital (The production company behind “Bruno”, “Babel”, and Robert Rodriguez’s “Shorts”), and Platinum Equity, the Beverly Hills firm that owns Delphi, the auto parts maker.

The franchise is a popular one because, not only is it quite the money-spinner, but no studio controls it. Whoever snaps up the rights to the series are free to do pretty much what they want with it – yep, they can totally overlook “Terminator Salvation” if they wish.

The rights are being sold by Halcyon, the production company behind the dreaded fourth instalment. Halycon filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after a dispute with Pacificor, a Santa Barbara-based hedge fund that lent Halcyon funds to buy the rights to the popular film series.

The auction does not cover earlier Terminator films.
