This is a Bust! Jennifer Love Hewitt joining Law & Order : SVU!?

Rather than try her luck on the big screen again, former “Ghost Whisperer” star (and producer) Jennifer Love Hewitt seems intent on sticking with TV.

According to Deadline, Hewitt is in line to replace Mariska Hagarty on “Law & Order : SVU”.

Probably the most serious adult role Hewitt – who cut her teeth on the ’90s teen drama “Party of Five” (which itself led to a spin-off for the actress, the short-lived “Time of Your Life”) – has taken on, to say the former teen-mag staple will have her work cut out for her is an understatement. At the same time, and she’s proved via performances in such fare as “Heartbreakers”, “The Audrey Hepburn Story” and Jackie Chan vehicle “The Tuxedo”, Hewitt is rather versatile (and capable of performing sans wet tank-top and, er, Scott Wolf).

The 32-year-old has spent the last few years starring in and shepherding the popular “Ghost Whisperer” series for ABC. Upon leaving she’s made a couple of Hallmark TV movies but, if the trade’s are anything to go by, hasn’t been courted for any bigscreen ventures – pity, I personally like the gal and think she’s got more charisma and spunk than half the lasses out there on the multiplex screens right now.

Deadline’s scoop :

Hargitay’s character Olivia Benson will continue to solve sex crimes alongside her partner, presumably Elliot Stabler (Meloni), pending him closing his deal. Then Benson will be promoted to a supervisor position, with a new female detective taking her place. That is the role that the producers are eying Hewitt for. Hewitt is not a stranger to SVU – she did a memorable guest appearance this past fall.

Never seen the show, but will Hargitary be missed?
