Jason Wan’s terrific “Insidious” mightn’t have made many critics top-10 end-of-year-list, but it did mine. A big-time fan of old school horror, I more than just admired the indy creeper – I dry humped it’s freaky frame until the last cheek was bruised. It was that good. Real fun. If you missed it at the cinema (and judging by those box office receipts, many didn’t) please pick it up on DVD. Or Blu-ray. Or VOD. Or what-have-you.
First word of a sequel came in November when Fusible became aware of some domain names that Sony had snapped up – like Insidious2movie.com. That was probably enough to suggest the studio had interest in returning to the house of horrors. But this latest bit confirms, cements and solidifies the plan.
Wan is in talks to helm a sequel to the 2011 hit, with frequent collaborator and Robin to his Batman Leigh Whannell back on writing duties.
“Insidious was the most fun project I’ve ever worked on,” Whannell says. “From start to finish it was an absolute joy—from the writing of the screenplay, all the way to the first screening of the film at the Toronto film festival. I believe that James Wan and I achieved what we set out to do—create a horror film for horror fans…Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film. FilmDistrict will distribute in the US, while the project financier Alliance will release in Canada, the UK and Spain and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will handle remaining territories.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but considering Wan and Whannell said they’d only do a sequel if they came up with a good story for one, it’s likely going to be a goodie.
“We are all so lucky to have James and Leigh return to this great franchise they created,” Producer Jason Blum said. “And of course we are all pleased to be back in business with our partners at Sony, FilmDistrict and Alliance Films.”
