Tom Cruise is now confirmed to star in Universal Pictures ”Oblivion”, the science fiction film that will be directed by Joseph Kosinski (”Tron: Legacy”).
Budgeted at $100 million, the film takes place in an apocalyptic future where most of the population lives in clouds above an earth surface that has been rendered uninhabitable. Cruise will play a soldier who’s stuck alone on the planet, repairing the drones that patrol and destroy a savage alien life form. He encounters a beautiful woman who crashes in a craft, and their experience together forces him to question his world view. Disney allowed Kosinski to shop it because it didn’t fit its family-film mold and attempts to rein it in to a PG rating was creatively strangling the project. It will be PG-13.
The script, originally written by William Monahan was then rewritten by Karl Gajdusek, which is based on an idea hatched by Kosinski himself.
Currently, Cruise is filming Adam Shankman’s musical film ”Rock of Ages”, where the Mission: Impossible star takes on the role of rocker Stacee Jaxx.
Deadline reports that Cruise is also circling around Guillermo Del Toro’s ”Pacific Rim” but as of right now, both actor and director are still in talks after Universal Pictures axed the chance for the two of them to work together in Guillermo’s ”At the Mountains of Madness” by H.P. Lovecraft since Universal couldn’t come up with the $200 million budget and had an R rating.
In the meantime, Charlie Hunnam from FX’s ”Sons of Anarchy” is the first to join Del Toro’s ”Pacific Rim” with Cruise still talking about appearing in the film.
Production on ”Oblivion” will begin in October. Cruise will next be seen in the December 16 release of ”Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” directed by Brad Bird.
