With the worldwide box-office needing to hit $250 m worldwide before Paramount presses the green switch on a sequel, it’s unlikely Tom Cruise’s “Jack Reacher” will be back.
As The Hollywood Reporter points out, though the film has done solid, the studio were hoping for far thicker rewards on the action-thriller, which has grossed $72.6 million domestically and $80.4 million internationally. The fate of the franchise lies with Japan, Korea and China, where the Christopher McQuarrie-directed movie has yet to open.
The $60 million dollar flick does have the potential to make up the rest of the wanted $250 m in Asia; after all, a large part of “Knight and Day”‘s $185 m profit was secured in Japan – and it was half the film “Reacher” is (but to that film’s merit, it also had a female co-lead to help pull in the ladies). There’s big competition for “Jack Reacher” in Asian though, Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit”, opening end of next month.
Financer Skydance was hoping that, like their and Cruise’s “Mission Impossible” series, “Jack Reacher” would be the first of what would be a successful action franchise for the ageing action hero Cruise. At this stage, it’s more likely we’ll see the series rebooted in a decade – with someone taller in the lead.
