“Fifty Shades of Grey” actor Luke Grimes is set to join Steve Carell in “Freeheld”.
Julianne Moore, Ellen Page and Michael Shannon also star in the indie drama based on a 2007 documentary.
The film follows a New Jersey car mechanic (Page) and her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester (Moore). When Hester is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the pair battle against the local government to receive domestic partner rights and secure Hester’s pension benefits.
Grimes will play an in-the-closet gay policeman who comes out to support Hester.
Pete Sollett is directing from Ron Nyswaner’s script.
Producers are Michael Shamberg, Stacy Sher, Ellen Page, Kelly Bush, James D. Stern, Richard Fischoff, Duncan Montgomery, Jack Selby and Cynthia Wade.
