Universal putting their new films on VOD from Friday due to theaters shutting down

Since theaters are going dark – not the best choice of words – this week, Universal Pictures has opted to release most of their new films on streaming straight away, as early as this Friday.

Coming Friday, “The Invisible Man”, “The Hunt”, and “Emma” will be available On-Demand in the US. “Trolls World Tour” will hit VOD April 10, the same day it’ll also be available to view in theaters.

The titles will be available to rent $19.99 for 48 Hours

In a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures cited “the rapidly evolving and unprecedented changes to consumers’ daily lives” as the reason for the decision.

“Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” said the company.

“We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible.”

Universal says this isn’t a permanent solution and it won’t be a thing post-Coronavirus.
