Van Damme talks Expendables

You’ll recall a few weeks back that word got out Jean Claude Van Damme had foolishly knocked back a role in Sylvester Stallone’s pricey action blockbuster “The Expendables”.

Nobody could work out why an actor, desperately in need of a comeback, let alone a theatrical release, would pass on such an offer.

Well, now Van Damme’s talking…

“Stallone gave me a part in his next movie,” Van Damme tells TOTAL FILM. “But I ask him about the subject, about the story.”

“He said, ‘You’re gonna make lots of money.’ I don’t want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it’s going to be.”

“[Stallone said:] ‘You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.’ [So I said:] ‘Sly, what is my character?’ So I didn’t do the movie.”

Yeah OK, so I don’t doubt that it’s all about money and action sequences – I mean, shit, it’s a Stallone film – but for what it’s worth, the script ain’t half bad. Surely Van Damme could’ve gotten his hands on the sides and recognized that himself.
