Vikings Renewed For Fifth Season As Jonathan Rhys Meyers Joins Cast

Vikings” was somewhat of a sleeper hit when it debuted on History Channel in 2013, but has go on to become a highly popular series. The action-drama is created by Michael Hurst who’s known for his renowned series on Showtime “The Tudors”, which ran from 2007-2010. The newer series follows a group of Norsemen during the Middle Ages as the raid, pillage, and discover foreign lands. And since its inception, it’s garnered much acclaim for the multiple strong female characters it follows along with its attention to historical detail.

And fans can rest easy now because, according to Variety, the series has been picked up for a 20-episode fifth season. Along with the renewal, “Tudors” star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is joining the cast. His role has not yet been revealed but considering his relationship with Hurst, not to mention his star power, it’s almost sure he’ll have weighty role in the upcoming season.

The lead of the series is played by Travis Fimmel, who’s making his blockbuster debut in this summer’s video game adaptation “Warcraft“. The supporting cast is also quite impressive, which only helps to make the series even better as seasons go by. But with it being renewed, it’s unclear as to how long it will actually run. Hurst’s Showtime series ran only four, so it’s possible that the end to “Vikings” could come sooner than what some might hope for, not factoring in its critical praise. But adding Meyers to the mix means that there’s still more entertaining episodes to come.

“Vikings” is currently airing on History.
