The godfather of horror, Wes Craven, has passed away at the age of 76.
The filmmaker, best known as the creator of the “Scream” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” franchises, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer.
Craven’s first feature “The Last House on the Left” cemented his career in horror, but it was 1984’s “Elm Street” – which spawned umpteen sequels, a spin-off, a TV series, comics, and a remake – that crowned him a master of the genre. Though Craven had little to do with most of the “Elm Street” sequels, he conceived and co-wrote the story for “A Nightmare on Elm Street III : Dream Warriors” and wrote and directed the acclaimed “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare”.
Craven’s other films include “The People Under The Stairs”, “Shocker”, “Vampire in Brooklyn”, “Music from the Heart”, “The Hills Have Eyes”, “Swamp Thing” and “Scream”. His last stint behind the camera was 2011’s “Scream 4”.
