Australian director Rowan Woods got to work with some of America’s (and Australia’s – Guy Pearce is in there!) finest talent on ”Winged Creatures”.
Kate Beckinsale, Forest Whitaker, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Hudson, Dakota Fanning…. It reads like a guest-list for the Academy Awards, doesn’t it!?
Woods (”Little Fish”) was able to attract such an A-list cast to his film because, quite simply, the script is brilliant. An adaptation of Roy Freirich’s debut novel about survivors of a brutal restaurant murder who are left to divine their own individual paths to understanding their mortality and connection to society, it really packs a punch! This one will leave you shaken and stirred!
After a gunman walks into Carby’s, a fast food chain restaurant along a Michigan highway, and kills two people before turning the gun on himself, a cross-section of society, including two teenagers, a driving instructor and a single mother emerge as survivors; their stories and viewpoints weave together for one very gripping story.
Newcomer Troy Garity (The son of actress Jane Fonda) gives a remarkable performance as psychologist Ron Abler, charged with helping victims of the violence, who finds no one wants his help, whilst Dakota Fanning (”Charlotte’s Web”, ”New Moon”) is mesmerizing as teenager Annie, an adolescent who wins fans at her school with her ‘version’ of how the events went down.
A real surprise package.
