Wolverine is Reel Steel

As reported a few weeks back, Hugh Jackman’s gone and got himself involved with a little dame now “Reel Steel”. It’s a Shawn ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ Levy-helmed futuristic robot pic that’s said to be more “Rocky” than “Transformers”.

And according to Variety, it’ll be Dreamworks 2.0’s – Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider are the captains of the newly-polished tug – first pic. The-boy-with-the-rod will be utilizing some (a teeny fraction – $80 million) of the $825 million they’ve recently scored to get themselves back in the green. Paramount has the option to chip in too, but at this stage they’re hanging onto their wallets.

Based on a short story by Richard Matheson, “Real Steel” was one of 17 projects that Spielberg and Snider took as part of DreamWorks’ split from Paramount last year.

The story centers on a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxers are replaced by robots. Jackman will play a struggling Robot Boxing promoter who finds a discarded robot that always seems to win. He also discovers he has a 11-year-old son, and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top.

Levy, best known for making hammy comedies like “Cheaper by the Dozen” and “Night at the Museum”, sees the film more of a sports movie than a science-fiction pic – but he may change his mind once he talks to the marketing department.
