Singleton tipped for “A-Team” movie

Finally, after years of photo-shopping different actors smoking cigars (to see how looks the most like Hannibal), Top Cow is said to be moving forward on their long-gestating “A-Team” movie. And yes, that sound you’re hearing is Mr. T doing cartwheels across Los Feliz Boulevard.

According to IESB, John Singleton (“2 Fast 2 Furious”, “Boyz N’The Hood”) is the shingle’s first choice for director. Singleton, of course, burst onto the scene in the early 90s with his urban indy smash “Boyz N’ The Hood” (1991) before being seduced by greenbacks, girlies and great seats at the Viper Room into joining the dark side. Since under the system’s rule, he’s directed popcorn fare like “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “Four Brothers””. He’s also been attached to a film version of Marvel’s “Luke Cage” for a few years.

This new “A-Team” movie will centre around a group of Gulf War veterans – as opposed to ‘Vietnam War’ vets – on the run serving as soldiers of fortune.

There’s no cast onboard as yet but everyone from Mel Gibson (‘Hannibal’; Bruce Willis is also a favourite for that part) to Brendan Fraser (‘Mouth’) to Ving Rhames (‘B.A’) has been rumoured for a role at one time or another. They’ll likely piss of everyone by casting Armie Hammer as Hannibal, Snoop Dogg as B.A and D.J Cotrona as Face.

The hold up on the film can be blamed on a game of musical chairs the studio has been playing with the writers on the project.

“We were working on a script for a few years but I didn’t like it so it’s been thrown out,” creator Stephen J. Cannell told Empire Online last year. “We’ve gone through a lot of scripts that we haven’t been happy with for one reason or another. We had one script writer who had never even watched the show! The studio was adamant about employing him but he just took the title and began to write anything he wanted, completely departing from the original show. The studio didn’t like it and neither did I.”

Sounds like they might have something they like now…. Or, like any other studio would, FOX has decided to press-forward with the film, shitty script and all, because it looks like they’re about to snag a big name to star in it- that way it doesn’t much matter whether it’s got a plot or not because Brad ‘Friggin’ Pitt or Sylvester ‘Damn’ Stallone’s starring in it! Blank cheque from investors right there!
