Caffeinated Clint
As reported here last year, good mate and “Wolf Creek” writer/director Greg Mclean has secured funding to make a sequel to his 2007 goosebump evoker. Speaking yesterday, the Melbourne-based filmmaker said the $10 million dollars will be spent on making a follow-up that’s less indy, more ‘blockbuster’.
“This is Wolf Creek the blockbuster,” McLean, who shot the original film on about a million bucks, tells The Mercury. “Our dream was to make a film that created an Australian bogeyman character that could be the ‘hero’ of a number of different films. In this film, we’ll really get the chance to do all the stuff we wanted to do with the first film but did not have the budget to do it.”
Here’s what Mclean told us in 2010 regarding the project :
”Indeed, we’ve been working on a Wolf Creek 2 script for a few years now, pushing hard to get it just right to make it as powerful and surprising a movie experience as possible”, Mclean says.
“This one’s a little wider in scope and we get to see Mick Taylor return in full terrifying glory across the lonely wastes of the Outback. We’re hoping to shoot next year and everyone involved is psyched to be seeing John Jarratt reprise Mick. And at the end of the day, from a directors point of view, he’s too fascinating and chilling a character to not explore the darkest depths of. And his depths, as you’ll see in the new film, are pretty damn dark…”
”We’re keeping story details top secret for now, but it is safe to say: scarier, bigger, badder,” producer Matt Hearn told ScreenDaily.
Thing is, the Darclight Films website already has a synopsis of the film up :
Lured by the promise of an authentic Australian holiday, backpackers RUTGER, KATARINA and PAUL visit the notorious Wolf Creek crater. Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes a horrific reality when they encounter the site’s most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the vast and isolated region ever wants to meet; MICK TAYLOR (John Jarratt).
As the backpackers flee, Mick pursues them on an epic, white knuckled rampage across hostile wasteland. Only one will remain to be dragged back to his lair to witness the true magnitude of his monstrosity. And if the last man standing is to have any hope of surviving where no one has survived before, he’ll have to use every ounce of cunning to outwit the man behind the monster, and become every bit as ruthless as the monster inside the man.
The sequel was officially announced by Screen Australia topper Ruth Harley at the Melbourne Intl. Film Festival at the weekend. Apparently the film will go before the cameras in February 2012 in , The John Jarratt starrer is one of three new movies that “hail from Victoria”.
Roadshow, who released the original, will distribute the “Wolf Creek” sequel.
