Redford says he’s the “head of S.H.I.E.L.D” in Captain America 2

Though it was reported, when Robert Redford was announced as joining the cast of “Captain America : The Winter Soldier”, that the legendary actor and filmmaker would be playing some sort of “senior” S.H.I.E.L.D official, the man himself has revealed a little more about the role’s particulars.

Seems Redford isn’t just playing any jo schmow background S.H.I.E.L.D tie, but the “head” of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But wait… wasn’t Samuel L.Jackson’s ‘Nick Fury’ the head of S.H.I.E.L.D?

Yeah, that’s where things get confusing.

Unless, of course, Redford’s playing a WWII-era ‘Nick Fury’ (assuming that’s a ‘codename’)? Or maybe Fury’s out of a job, replaced by old man Redford? Is Redford taking Jackson’s place in the next phase of the Marvel movie series?

SpinOffOnline asked Redford, out promoting “The Company You Keep”, about the role and what appealed to him about doing such a splashy, money-first blockbuster.

“The Captain America thing is just a very simple thing,” Redford explained. “I wanted to do something different. I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess.”

Redford doesn’t do many movies these days, but his commitment to playing this “head of S.H.I.E.LD” in “Captain America 2” suggests, in all probability, he’ll be reprising the role in future Marvel movies too. Will Redford also be in “Avengers 2”? Maybe “Guardians of the Galaxy”? Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

“Captain America : The Winter Soldier” is released April 2014.
