Blair Witch flops; is the franchise dead again?

Seems tracking firms don’t always get it right.

“Blair Witch”, estimated to open quite big, has tanked at the US office. The Lionsgate release, which went up against “Sully” and the new “Bridget Jones” threequel (though it too didn’t do much business in the states), disappointed with only $9.7 million.

In a reference to losing the weekend to “Sully”, “Blair Witch” Director Adam Wingard joked with co-writer Simon Barrett on Twitter : “I told you we shoulda made that movie about the boring guy who landed a plane in water instead”.

Reviews may have hurt the film’s performance. It would seem that you either loved (as Clint did) or hated the film – with most critics ripping the belated sequel to shreds.

While it’s likely Lionsgate will put the franchise on ice again for the meantime, Wingard did tell EW pre-opening weekend that he would like to see the “Blair Witch” series continue now that he’d [hopefully] reinvigorated it.

“We know where we would take it if there is a sequel,” Wingard told Entertainment Weekly in July.

Maybe we can still get that story, guys? “Blair Witch” graphic novel, maybe?
