CBS picks up Beverly Hills Cop TV series

CBS television have been the successful network in acquiring the TV spin-off / re-do of ‘Beverly Hills Cop’. The new TV show, based on the hugely successful Eddie Murphy motor-mouth cop vehicle of he 80s and early 90s, will tell the story of blue collar cop Aaron Foley, son of detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) and his transfer from Detroit to Beverly Hills.

The pilot is to feature Murphy, who is expected to heavily feature throughout the course of the show, and is also produced by him and Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman at Ryan’s Sony-based Midd Kid Productions.

Shawn Ryan has a tremendous track record, having previously penned ‘The Shield’, produced ‘The Unit’ and ‘Lie to Me’ and recently written the Tom Clancey / Kevin Costner spin off ‘Without Remorse’. His Sony-based production company Midd Kid Productions will join CBS, (home of ‘Hawaii 5-0’, ‘The Unit’ and ‘NCIS’).

As a one-time close-call project for Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Murphy had three ”Beverly Hills Cop” movies, the second directed by the late-great Tony Scott. A spec script for a proposed fourth movie was even penned by our very own Clint Morris, with a hot-on-his-heels treatment for one once written by yours truly. Both were to never be, but more established writers like Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (“3:10 to Yuma”) near got theirs done. “Cop 4” or no “Cop 4”, I for one am definitely looking forward to this show. The heat is on!
