Coop confirmed for new Twin Peaks

Like a miuschevious kid searching through Dad’s wardrobe the week before Christmas, there’s no surprises here.

Kyle MacLachlan is having his suit ironed and his undies soaked in softener. The actor announced at the TCA’s today that he’ll be indeed (he’s been hinting at it for months – mostly on Twitter) reprising Agent Dale Cooper for Showtime’s new “Twin Peaks” sequel series, set to launch next year.

MacLachlan, dressed appropriately Cooper-ish, walked out on stage to offer Showtime topper David Nevins a cup of “damn good coffee”.

“I’m very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of Twin Peaks,” MacLachlan told attendees. “May the forest be with you.”

“I was begging them to pass muster with David Lynch,” Nevins later said of how the revival came together. “Finally, the timing was right, coming up on the 25th anniversary of the original series. “25 years in David’s mind was the magic number, there is a reference in the original, ‘I’ll see you in 25 years’. He pays attention to such numerology.”

Nevins says a painting in his office also helped him seal the deal.

“(Lynch) was fixated on the violent, weird imagery artwork in my office,” Nevins said. “There’s a book shelf falling on a young girl, he liked that. We were off in business.”

The new 8-episode series, to be co-written by Lynch and Mark Frost and directed by Lynch, will have an ending.

“They’ve promised closure. From what I’ve seen, I think it will live up to expectations.”

While MacLachlan is the only official cast member at this stage, a number of other ‘originals’ including Sheryl Lee, Dana Ashbrook, and Catherine E.Coulson have hinted online that they’ll be back.
