There’s been little movement on the “Point Break” remake since it was announced Alcon had nabbed the rights from RGM. At the time, RGM had just let go of their long-proposed dream to sequelize the original film, with “Point Break : Indo” – which would’ve centered on an undercover agent going up against pirates in Indonesia – stalling shortly before production. When Alcon got hold of the property, they abandoned plans to do a follow-up to the 1991 picture, and instead went the ‘do over’ approach on the remake of the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze flick.
After a prolonged pause in updates, Alcon has revealed – via Deadline – Ericson Core (sounds like a brand of camera, no!?) will be directing the picture; he’s the chap that directed the Mark Wahlberg flick “Invincible”, and prior to that, lived another life as a cinematographer, working on such flicks as “Fast and the Furious”, “Daredevil” and “Payback” (When RGM had the “Point Break” brand, Jeff Wadlow and Jan de Bont both flirted with the idea of helming the sequel).
”They’re setting the remake in the world of international extreme sports, and an undercover FBI agent infiltrates a criminal ring”, Deadline reports.
While one can’t guarantee screenwriter Kurt Wimmer (“Salt”) will dish out a fresh, unique spin on the original film, Core’s background in cinematography at least guarantees the film will look, er, pretty.
Shooting begins on “Point Break” at the end of the year, with the film likely going out through Alcon’s outputer Warner Bros sometime in 2014.
