Death Race 2

By Captain Cumquat

Luke Goss steps in for fellow countryman Jason Statham in the direct-to-DVD “Death Race” sequel.

A remake of an old Roger Corman flick, 2008’s “Death Race” was a slick, gore-heavy action number about a convict (Statham) who is forced to participate in the prison’s choice sport : A deadly car race in which prisoners are encouraged to obliterate each other on their way to the finish line.

“Death Race 2″ is, quite welcomingly, more of the same.

”Death Race 2” tells the backstory of how the ‘Death Race’ was invented and the origins of the Frankenstein character.

Goss (”Hellboy II”) plays Luke, a small-time crook that’s sent to prison for accidentally killing a cop. Once behind the bars of Terminal Island, the gruff loner is roped into entering the newly-established Death Race – a deadly car race that pits prisoners against each other.

For a DVD premiere, “Death Race 2” is pretty solid – some great action sequences, a very impressive support cast (Danny Trejo, Sean Bean, Ving Rhames), proficient direction by DTV regular Roel Reine, and – though not a necessity for such a film – a well-thought script.

Beer. Pizza. “Death Race 2”. New Years Eve… Done.
