A respectable directorial debut from visual effects animator Tim Pyle, ”Decaying Orbit” delivers way more than one would expect from a low budget Sci-Fi movie. Complete with lasers, intergalactic debris, interstellar space battles, and sexy cyborgs, every scene in this movie has been carefully crafted to deliver a visually riveting space saga. The sound effects also added nicely to the fantasy, sans some unnecessarily distracting metallic stomping during a recon mission to a nearby ship. The stilted acting drew attention to itself as the weakest part of this movie, however, it’s no worse than most comparable low budget sci-fi offerings. Kudos to Darren Schnase and David Patterson for some elegant thespian navigation through some extra-terrestrial dialogue.

The premise: A space ship housing a bio-warfare R&D lab is destroyed in a suspicious explosion. Only five survivors escape – one of whom is infected with a deadly virus. The dubious relationships among the survivors are tested to the limits as skepticism is cast on each of them as the rogue behind the catastrophe. The script does a nice job of keeping the tension wound tightly throughout the 90 min run time as new information unravels at each treacherous turn of the plot. Almost forgot, extra kudos to Pyle for concocting clever new devices necessitating that all the actors strip to their underwear.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of ”Decaying Orbit”. If you happen to be a space caper fanatic, this would be worth tuning into the Sci-Fi channel for, or even renting for a pixel packed popcorn flick
